Mar 22, 2021 at 8:48 | comment | added | Arnaud Mortier | @loopywalt In this specific situation I don't think it really makes a difference, but let's say option 2 : if he could force a selfmate with some non-king black pieces still on the board he would go for it, to prevent the ultimate humiliation and keep some control on his own destiny :-)
Mar 20, 2021 at 21:38 | comment | added | loopy walt | As long as possible against an opponent who just tries to checkmate as fast as possible or against an opponent who tries to capture all pieces and then checkmate as fast as possible. If he could force a selfmate but with some non-king black pieces still alive would he go for it?

Aug 11, 2019 at 7:38 | comment | added | Arnaud Mortier | @micsthepick What I intended to say is that he is playing like an engine, winning is his priority, and if he cannot find a winning line then he will look for a draw, and if he cannot find a way to draw then its priority is for the game to be as long as possible. It is a common requirement, I believe, in this kind of optimization problem.
Aug 11, 2019 at 0:30 | comment | added | micsthepick | "Your brother is playing optimally and making every move he can to make the game last longer in case he can't win." I'm not sure what this is supposed to say, but if it means what I think it means, it should say, "in [the] case that he can't win" or something that makes that more clear, or perhaps it should say "In case he has an opportunity to win".

Aug 8, 2019 at 3:11 | comment | added | Cloudy7 | Shouldn't it read, "deliver checkmate in as many moves as possible"? (EDIT: No, as both conditions must be met. Whoops.)

Aug 7, 2019 at 0:21 | comment | added | Gareth McCaughan♦ | The most difficult thing about this problem seems to be finding moves that make progress but don't checkmate the black king...
