I'm interested in finding English words that, when any one letter is removed, the result is still a valid, correctly-spelled English word. For example, the word "SPAY" is an example of such a word, as "PAY" "SAY", "SPY", and "SPA" are also words. I have an example of a five-letter word, but I'm interested to see what others come up with!

It seems you are looking for

A versatile word. That post contains several examples such as BOATS and LOOPS. A 6 letter example is also given: SHOOTS.

I wrote some code to identify all such words, using the CSW21 Scrabble lexicon as my dataset. The longest such word is six letters long; all five and six-letter examples are bolded in the list below.

The only six-letter words here are DEARNS, HEARDS, SHOOTS, and SPARED.

Bread Read Bead Bred Brea I checked out Brea and it seems to be a word, although Scottish I think.

  • $\begingroup$ What about "Brad"? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that's a word. $\endgroup$

  • $\begingroup$ @F1Krazy: a brad is a small nail or a brass fastener for holding sheets of paper together. $\endgroup$ Sep 24, 2023 at 17:25
  • $\begingroup$ I don't see how this adds to the first answer posted here - the word this has its shorter than the longest there. $\endgroup$
