Answer to the question in the title:

Layback sound mixing is the process of syncing a finished audio track (composed of music, effects, dialog, commentary, and any other tracks) to the video. A layback sound mixer is one who finishes this process and verifies that the sound stays in sync throughout the duration of the movie.

Sources:

Larry Hopkins is credited as layback sound mixer on an enormous number of movies and television shows.

$\begingroup$ Given that the user posted this on Puzzling.SE, and the question in the title is accompanied by a puzzle, I don't think they needed a literal answer to it. While wonderfully informative, this would have been better in a comment. $\endgroup$ – generalcrispy May 4 '18 at 18:18
  • $\begingroup$ @generalcrispy stipulated, but comment formatting is very lacking. :) I'll take the downvote if necessary. $\endgroup$ – Ross Presser May 4 '18 at 18:22

$\begingroup$ I couldn't downvote this! It's got good grammar, high quality, and I learned something. Not gonna punish you for that. $\endgroup$ – generalcrispy May 4 '18 at 18:24

$\begingroup$ It's not the puzzle solution, but it's Friday and I genuinely was curious what a layback sound mixer was. $\endgroup$ – Bilkokuya May 4 '18 at 20:17
