Here's one I know from childhood. I didn't see it on here, so I thought I would add it.

What can go up a chimney down, but not down a chimney up?

  • $\begingroup$ @PaigeMeinke Ah, I was not aware. I just remembered it and verified it wasn't on here. I don't think it merited a down-vote. Should I only share original material? $\endgroup$ – Hawkeye Oct 17 '17 at 18:02
  • $\begingroup$ Wasn't me, but in future cases, if you do post something that isn't your own creation, then please source it? $\endgroup$ – Sensoray Oct 17 '17 at 18:06
  • $\begingroup$ @PaigeMeinke I understand. This one I happen to know is a children's riddle with no easily discerned source. It's probably as old as Mother Goose. I've now verified that online. I appreciate the input. =) $\endgroup$ – Hawkeye Oct 17 '17 at 18:21
  • $\begingroup$ I remember this riddle from an old Apple II game - something to do with dragon's teeth. Does anyone else remember the game? If so, can you say what it was? $\endgroup$ – David Aug 26 '18 at 2:15

An umbrella. If "up" (open), you cannot pull it down a chimney (it's too wide); if it's "down" (closed), it will easily fit through.

It goes up a chimney down, and in the unlikely case that it isn't burnt up and comes back down the chimney it would come down down.

$\begingroup$ I like this answer. Very unexpected. The only difference is you have "down down" as opposed to "down... up". I suppose this could be a second riddle when the after the first is guessed in social situations. "What goes up a chimney down, and goes down a chimney down." After the first answer is guessed, this one would throw them off. =) $\endgroup$ – Hawkeye Oct 23 '17 at 23:21

Well, perhaps a possible answer is

An (opened) umbrella !
