The answer is

I was expecting an answer relating to man and/or certainly. I can't figure out why that is the answer.

  • $\begingroup$ Courtesy is lack of rudeness. It might not be a very good clue. $\endgroup$ Commented Oct 16, 2023 at 19:36
  • $\begingroup$ Found this same clue (perhaps the entire crossword?) in an earlier issue of The Catholic Weekly, 15 May 2022. Other clues include License absense of noise (5), which is an unindicated anagram, and Claw used in fight along with teeth (5), which is a hidden word with two extraneous words in the clue, so trying to find a Ximenean explanation this could be futile. It almost looks like it wants to be an anagram of "certainly not a", which is 13 letters but obviously not quite the right ones. $\endgroup$
