Jan 19, 2017 at 18:20 comment added M Oehm And you've picked the K from Lake Placid, although that's in the answer for -85*. The extra letter here is A, and that makes the first part of the solution "The answer is ...". The order of the Games is clear, even if a city has hosted them twice: The -5, for example, means five year ago and refer to London 2012. An asterisk (snowflake) marks Winter Games, the caret Summer Games.
Jan 19, 2017 at 18:15 comment added M Oehm And 5^ is NO OLD, because it's missing in "No Country for Old Men". That fits the crosser and makes the missing letter an N instead of an L. It also makes the last word of the solution Melbourne.

Jan 19, 2017 at 17:58 comment added M Oehm It also fits with the existing crossing letters. :) But you've added an explanation and I haven't.
Jan 19, 2017 at 17:58 comment added Ian MacDonald Radio is the word that fits the cross clues.
Jan 19, 2017 at 17:58 comment added Michael Seifert @MOehm: Ah, I didn't even see that you could rearrange ADROI to make a word. That's nicer than my answer.
Jan 19, 2017 at 17:57 comment added M Oehm -1^ is Radio Joiner (Rio de janeiro + E).
Jan 19, 2017 at 17:56 comment added Michael Seifert The answer to -1^ is "ADROI JOINER" (since by "joining" each given letter to the letters ADROI, you get an anagram of the given word.)

Jan 19, 2017 at 17:47 comment added Ian MacDonald Aha; you're right. I read Los Angeles as the answer by mistake.
Jan 19, 2017 at 17:44 comment added Roger @IanMacDonald I think the fifth letter has to be S. But this is still helpful, thanks!
