When I went to school (1960s) a solution involving pipes over/below was regarded as "cheating", since the purpose of the problem was to demonstrate what isn't possible on a flat plane but is possible on a torus. Topology 101, I suppose. I vaguely recall there might have been a SciAm article about it. | |
