Sep 4 at 12:59 | comment | added | Weather Vane | It does make a difference – if you already have the number, the duplicate can be placed either side.
Sep 4 at 12:58 | comment | added | Vicky | @WeatherVane not necessarily, it's a RNG so there is always a chance of the same number being rolled twice (or, indeed for that matter, the same number 20 times in a row :D). I'd say it still counts as a win if you end up with the numbers ordered, though, even if some of the numbers are the same.
Sep 4 at 12:56 | comment | added | Vicky | @Christoph thank you for that pointer, very interesting indeed!
Sep 4 at 12:56 | comment | added | Vicky | @TheEmptyStringPhotographer I know it's random, but we ought to be able to say something about the probabilities.
Sep 4 at 12:36 | comment | added | Weather Vane | Is each number rolled unique?
Sep 4 at 12:07 | comment | added | Christoph | There's a reddit thread where a few strategies are being discussed. The best strategy in this thread has a winning rate of 0.0093%.
Sep 4 at 11:58 | comment | added | The Empty String Photographer | I suppose you could just divide it into groups of 50 (1000 / 20) and put it into the list based on what group it is in. And if the space it would go in is occupied, put it in the next available space right or left depending on whether it is bigger or smaller than the number occupying the space you wanted to place it in. Ultimately, though, it’s a random number generator. You can’t predict what number it will output.
