Jul 16, 2020 at 17:51 comment added chrylis -cautiouslyoptimistic- @Stiv Presuming (as I do) that the element was named for the place, at the time Cyprus wasn't considered its own country. This seems like a red herring at this point, though!
Jul 16, 2020 at 16:00 comment added Jeremy Dover @Stiv: I like your ideas, and would like to subscribe to your newsletter! :-) Seems like you know why I was asking...for a friend.
Jul 16, 2020 at 15:59 comment added Stiv @JeremyDover I'm no historian and I'm no etymologist, but as a geographer (cough... which I'm also not really) I would consider the country and the island to be equivalent. It's not like (e.g.) Great Britain, which is technically an island and not the country name - Cyprus is both... To be honest you'll always find a site somewhere online that argues that the country name is derived from the element instead of vice versa, but I would personally consider them interconnected. Hey, there's always on the Eurasian landmass ;-)
Jul 16, 2020 at 15:58 comment added Jeremy Dover Good start! These are exactly the sorts of things that you should be looking at!
Jul 16, 2020 at 15:50 comment added Jeremy Dover @Stiv: I did not know that about Copper. Never even occurred to me to look. But...asking for a friend, would you say it is named after the island Cyprus, or the country Cyprus?

Jul 16, 2020 at 15:39 comment added chrylis -cautiouslyoptimistic- @Stiv I'll clarify. That one is open to interpretation.
Jul 16, 2020 at 15:38 comment added chrylis -cautiouslyoptimistic- @JaapScherphuis I'm aware of that option, but Ga starts getting overloaded fast (I think I have 5 possible categories for it even before that).
Jul 16, 2020 at 15:34 comment added Jaap Scherphuis You could fix that previously invalidated category by inverting it i.e. ROT13(flzoby va erirefr nycunorgvpny beqre).
Jul 16, 2020 at 15:33 comment added Stiv I think copper falls into your first category too - it's named after Cyprus, technically...
Jul 16, 2020 at 15:32 comment added bobble Here's a category to make up for the one I invalidated: elements with a double letter. (Cu, Ga, Tl)

Jul 16, 2020 at 15:28 comment added bobble Wouldn't copper (Cu) fall into your second category?
